About Me
Hi, I'm Linuk, an online mathematics tutor and a university engineering student with a strong academic background in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science. I have always enjoyed understanding how things work and finding different ways to approach problems when the first method doesn't quite make sense. My interest in tutoring comes from the years of seeing my own parents teach students when I was younger, then I decided to take the challenge on myself and over the years I have taught students of all levels from primary to secondary school. My motivation for tutoring comes from the process of helping someone to go from not understanding to solving problems on their own and I believe that maths becomes much easier when you understand why something works than a simple memorisation of a method. So currently I have had experience working with students through online mathematics tutoring, where I have helped students work through difficult topics, practise problem solving and build their confidence. My approach is to adapt lessons to each student's individual needs rather than following the same method with everyone. Some students may need a topic explained from the basics, while others may understand the theory but struggle to apply it to exam questions. I help prepare students from KS2 mathematics all the way to GCSE/IGCSE (Edexcel). Covering all topics that they are tested on and helping them understand exam question patterns and strategies which would improve accuracy and speed for exam conditions. My experience for this comes in going through the academic route myself achieving good results and now practicing those key concepts at a higher level while studying for my engineering degree at my university. And at every stage I made sure to help my sibling, peers and other people from my Sri Lankan background, so they feel better about their maths skills. My approach during a lesson would be to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I don't believe that getting something wrong means you're bad at maths often, it is simply an indication that there is a particular step or concept that needs to be approached differently. Lessons can involve explaining concepts from the ground up, working through examples together, tackling challenging problems, identifying gaps in understanding and practising exam style questions. The goal for me as a tutor is to make sure the student builds confidence and understanding to the point where they can solve problems independently and not require my help.
